Often likened to vegetable sculptures because of their striking forms, or simply to natural bonsai, caudiciforms and pachycauls represent a category of succulent plants that cuts across different genera and families and has won the appreciation of botanists and collectors because of the multiplicity and originality of their growth forms. These plants, which are often very different from each other from a taxonomical point of view, share an enlarged woody organ located in the lower part of the trunk (the caudex), which is often partially buried and used to store water and energy. They are immediately recognizable by the stocky and robust shape of the trunk (pachycauls), on which unexpected flowers and ephemeral seasonal foliage often appear. This book, which is addressed to both experenced collectors and beginners, offers an introduction to the general aspects of these plants, with an in-depth look at the genera and species that are most common in cultivation or which, in the opinion of the authors, deserve special attention. Together with detailed information on biology and distribution of plants in habitat, advice is given about proper cultivation and propagation according to the personal experience of the authors.
